Vibrant glow sticks, an impressive DJ, and stunning dance moves! Alpha’s Student Government put on an electrifying dance in the large gym, themed around a “glowing” ambience through the use of black lights and glowsticks.

“I think in the end it was really worth it,” says Paniz Najjarrezaparast, a Grade 12 Offence representative. Many hours were spent by students with the goal of throwing a stellar dance.
One of Alpha’s Student Government’s many focuses was advertising the dance through Snapchat, Instagram, and posters. All of their efforts were certainly not in vain.
“[…] It was just up to [Alpha’s Student Government] to sell tickets. Which they did. They sold over 75 than they’d expected,” says Ms. Temple, the sponsor teacher of Student Government.

On November 16th,  the doors to the large gym were officially opened at 7:00 pm. Students were asked to check-in before entering and Alpha’s Offence organized the coat check. Upon entering the gym floor, each student was given a complimentary glowstick to wear.

Students could also receive glow-in-the-dark face paint, purchase refreshments at the concession stand, and even have their photo taken at the photo booth.

The DJ featured a variety of songs that had students dancing and singing along to the lyrics. Some brought students back to their elementary school years, namely, the 2011 hit single, “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO and 2012’s “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Of course, recent hit songs such as “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi were played as well. From hip-hop to electronic, the DJ kept the vibe alive and his performance was generally well-received by students. When the dance was in full swing, large beach balls were also thrown into the crowd.

At 9:00 pm, the dance was scheduled to end. However, the DJ received an encore and with approval from staff, they played “Yeah!” by Usher as their last song. Many students left the large gym that night with a smile on their face.

As the first dance of the year, the Glow dance was quite successful. Alpha’s Student Government outperformed their ticket sales expectations, received rave reviews and have many people looking forward to the next one.
