The drama studio was thrumming with noise and excitement during fourth block on November 29th, as the Grade 8 cohort packed into folding chairs to listen to speeches from a few of their fellow peers. Eleven candidates, an impressive number, presented their platforms and ideas in hopes of being elected as one of two Grade 8 representatives in Student Council.

Cold, misty days and grey, clouded skies equate to students in need of a distraction… what better diversion than to explore the campus of Simon Fraser University? On Friday, November 25th, French Immersion students from the Grade 11 cohort spent an afternoon up at the Simon Fraser University Burnaby campus, accompanied by French Immersion teachers M. Lee and Mme. Simian. They all gathered and wound their way around campus to eventually meet and be welcomed at a large, scholarly building: the SFU Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs. They received a warm welcome by Anne Marie Gagné, coordinator of French programs who ushered them graciously into the building. Alpha alumni Hamish Clinton, currently a first-year student at SFU, dropped by to give a brief presentation on the French program offerings and to answer any questions. Gagné then led a tour on foot of the campus, pointing out notable attractions and explaining the student life at SFU. Walking across the campus, the students stared in awe at all of the different structures around them, as well as the architecture and makeup of the campus. Impressive and well-designed indeed! For example, the campus was designed to be walkable and accessible without the need for automobiles within the university. Various artistic structures are scattered across the campus- keep your eyes peeled next time you visit! The day concluded with a small gift bag as a parting gift. With university applications in the near future, being able to personally experience the many campuses is a good way to determine which one is right for you! By Natasha Bussanich and Alicia Reil
After an exciting, yet exhausting Halloween, the last thing you want to do is wake up and go to school. However, Grad Council gave the option for students to wear their comfiest pyjamas and bring their fuzzy blankets to make the school day a little bit better! “Halloween was a aMOOzing, but pyjama day was UTTERly awesome!” stated Trevor Tan, a Grade 12 student. “I loved it, who doesn’t like going to school in pyjamas?” said Clara Liu, a Grade 9 student. On November 17th, Mr. A. Wong’s Biology 11 class took an adventure-filled trip to the Vancouver Aquarium. The students had the opportunity to visit many animal enclosures and fill out a worksheet to document what they learned. By Nadiya Scratchely. Photos by Katharine Zhang.
On November 8th, Alpha’s Grade 8 students took a field trip to Science World, their first field trip of the year! Despite the huge crowd of students, Science World was big enough to fit everyone. The students all met at Alpha to leave at around eight thirty in the morning to take the Skytrain to Science World, and arrived back at school just before the last bell rang. |
