On Thursday, June 1st and Friday, June 2nd, hundreds of students, parents, staff, and faculty packed into the drama studio for Game of Tiaras, presented by Alpha Theatre Company. The play was written by Don Zolidis and was a satirical combination of Shakespeare’s King Lear, Game of Thrones, and Disney princesses.
The play featured drama, plot twists, singing, and especially murder. Game of Tiaras is Alpha Theatre Company’s largest production to date, with a full-scale castle set and painted scenery. Seating was packed: over 250 people attended over the two nights. The concession stand was also a hit, selling iced tea and treats during the intermission. According to internal survey results performed by Alpha Theatre Company, the reaction was very positive: over 98% of respondents would recommend ATC to a friend.

Tina, a Grade 8 student, thought the play was “really creative” and that “the students were quality actors.” Amy Ricker, also Grade 8, enjoyed the show as well. “I thought it was a cool twist on Disney and it was nice to see some of the princesses showing more backbone… I also liked how there was a lot of little references and little comical scenes, which I thought put it over the top.”

The show, directed by Jennifer Copping with the help of Ms. Stewart, Ms. Temple, Sylvie La Riviere and the support of many others, was a great way to end the school year. More information about the show and a copy of the program is accessible online on Alpha Theatre Company’s website www.alphatheatre.tk.
